Todor Zhivkov’s plane sunk in Black Sea near Varna

The plane used by Bulgaria’s former communist dictator, Todor Zhivkov, was sunk in the waters of the Black Sea Wednesday 25th of May 2011 at 10:44 am. The craft is now 23 meters under the water surface about 2-3 miles away from the St.St. Konstantin and Elena resort near the Black Sea capital Varna.

In September, 2009, a special platform moved the 40-ton TU-154 airplane, without its wings, towards the Varna Lake and it was later transported by a barge to the Varna shipyard where the body of the craft was cleaned and all systems and cables removed.

With time, the 11-meter tall and 48-meter long plane will become an artificial reef and refuge for many sea species. Its remains will turn both into tourist attraction and practice diving ground. The access to the plane will be free of charge.

Varna’s communal swimming pool “Yulian Russev”

Swimming pool “Yulian Russev” was opened on September 13, 2007. It is Olympian size of 25/50 m. and it has a modern wastewater treatment system, 600 seats, as well as premises for doping control and facilities for disabled people.

Historical Seas Tall Ships Regata 2010 ” in Varna

The first participants in the 2010 Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta have arrived in Bulgaria’s largest Black Sea port of Varna even though most were delayed by the lack of strong winds.

The first boats to arrive in Varna on Thursday were “The Hansa” from Spain, the Russian boat “Akela”, the Ukrainian “Tamara”, the Turkish “Bodrum”, and the Greek vessels “Mythos” and “Adonis”.

All of the rest of the 22 participants sailing under the flags of 16 nations, including Bulgaria’s barquentine Kaliakra are expected to arrive by noon on Friday. The formal ceremony for the welcoming of the Regatta in Varna is scheduled for 2:30 pm on Friday. This is the first time that a Bulgarian port is part of the Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta.
